Rides STILL suspended due to COVID-19
Just keeping in touch with our members. The latest news is that rides are still suspended for the time being due to COVID-19.
On December 3, 2020, the California Department of Public Health issued a Regional Stay At Home Order that prohibits all gatherings with members of other households. The order remains in effect as long as the the available adult ICU bed capacity is less than 15 percent.
You can read the order HERE.
As of December 17, 2020 at 8:00 PM, there were 288 Available Adult ICU Beds in the entire LA County, which is only 12 percent of the Total Adult ICU Bed Capacity. So, as long as that magic number remains less than 15 percent, Different Spokes is not going to be offering any club rides.
You can view the metrics HERE.
Please keep riding on your own. Stay in shape, but ride either by yourself or with a few friends.

Rides suspended until December 27, 2020
On November 27, 2020, the Los Angeles County Public Health Department issued an order (which you can read in full here):
As new COVID-19 cases remain at alarming levels and the number of people hospitalized continue to increase, a temporary Los Angeles County Health Officer Order will be issued to require additional safety measures across sectors. The temporary order will take effect Monday, November 30, 2020 and remain in effect through December 20, 2020.
- Gatherings: All public and private gatherings with individuals not in your household are prohibited, except for faith based services and protests, which are constitutionally protected rights.
Please don't stop riding your bikes. Stay in shape, but ride either by yourself or with a few friends.

Different Spokes guidelines with respect to COVID-19
Please wear a helmet when on the bike. Please wear a face covering when off the bike. Practice "social distancing" during rides by not following too close to each other.
You should be able to practice social distancing at our meeting venues. Different Spokes rides do not generally meet at restaurants or coffee shops. They meet at public parks where there is free parking, restrooms and a water fountain available.
Face coverings should be worn while you are off of your bike, but while you are on your bike, particularly if you are pedaling hard, you may lower your face covering so that you can breathe freely.
Los Angeles has the following guidelines.
Face Coverings: When in public or after being in public, Angelenos should wear a face covering when exiting your home and when interacting with others.
Physical Distancing: Keep 6ft between you and other residents.
Hand washing: Scrub your hands with soap and clean water for at least 20 seconds after touching frequently-used items, such as door handles, gas pumps, shopping carts or cashier touchscreens and PIN pads.
Salutations & Greetings: Adopt non-contact salutations, such as waving.
High-touch Surfaces: Routinely clean high-touch surfaces such as doorknobs, phones, and car steering wheels, using soap and water, followed by a disinfectant
Travel: Avoid non-essential personal and leisure travel
Communal Food & Drink: Do not share or eat communal food and drink at any gatherings

Planning on bringing Different Spokes rides back on Sunday, June 7, 2020.
Here is a tentative ride schedule. For details an any ride, just click on the ride's name. A new Facebook events will be created for each ride prior to each ride. If you don't feel comfortable on a group ride yet, it is totally understandable. Otherwise, please plan to exercise social distancing and bring a face covering in addition to your helmet. June rides will be on the easier side to help you ease back into riding if you've been off of your bike. If you want a harder ride, feel free to ride your bike to the meeting location or to go rogue and add miles on at the end of a ride. Hopefully, this will work out.

Club Rides Are Suspended Temporarily
CLUB RIDES CANCELLED TEMPORARILY
Different Spokes Bicycling Club of Southern California is a member of the League of American Bicyclists.
The Bike League has recommended that cycling clubs reschedule all events including group rides.
USA Cycling has recommended that Group Rides be suspended at least through April 5, 2020.
Bicycling Magazine has an FAQ on How to Ride Safely Amid Coronavirus Concerns.
Bicycling Magazine also has an article on Spit and Snot Etiquette During the Coronavirus Outbreak. (Yes, you read that right.)
Additionally, Harold Sarmiento, a friend of Different Spokes and Nurse Practitioner in the Infectious Disease Department at Kaiser's Los Angeles Medical Center has also recommended that we cancel our club rides for at least a few weeks.
Therefore, we are sorry to have to announce this, but we are going to suspend club rides for the time being. Your club officers will continue cycling individually, and you are encouraged to do the same in order to preserve your sanity and to remain physically fit. Exercise does boost your immune system, so please continue to ride your bikes.
